Thousand Palms Oasis

Thousand Palms OasisThe Coachella Valley Preserve is a 20,000+ acre sanctuary for the endangered Coachella Valley Fringe-Toed Lizard. The site is just a short drive east of Palm Springs and you can spend 15 minutes or hours here exploring the Oasis. This interesting fan palm paradise is situated exactly over the famed San Andreas fault-line. This photo is of the natural palm preserve sitting in the middle of the desert.  They are huge like redwoods.  These are the only native palm trees in California.  We ran across it on a 45 mile tandem bike ride we took thru Coachella valley (riding in the Tour de Tucson the Sat before Thanksgiving so getting some miles in).  Did not have time to hike the McCallum Trail in the 1000 Palms Preserve but it looks interesting.  It was a great lunch spot with picnic table among the palms!
